Can I return something to Target without a receipt?

Often yes: Target can look up purchases made with a card, a RedCard, or the app, and where nothing can be found you may be offered store credit at the item's current price rather than a refund.

The lookup covers more than people expect

  • Card purchases, found from the card you paid with.
  • RedCard purchases, tied to your account.
  • App and online orders, in your order history.
  • Gift receipts, which work without exposing what was paid.

With no record at all

Expect store credit at the current selling price rather than what you paid, and expect to show photo ID. There is a cap on how much can be returned this way in a year. If the item has since been discounted, the credit follows the lower price, which is the part that surprises people most.

Worth knowing

Target's own brands typically carry a much longer return window than national brands, so a no-receipt return on a Target-brand item may still be well inside its window even if you bought it many months ago.
