The short version

Standard window
90 days from when you receive it
Clock starts
At delivery for online orders, at purchase in store
Receipt
Bring the receipt, the return barcode from the Target app, or the card you paid with so the store can look the purchase up. With no proof of purchase at all, you may get a merchandise return card instead, and you will need government ID. Target Plus partner items always need proof of purchase.
Refund goes
Back to the original payment method. Gift card purchases come back as a new Target eGiftCard. Gift returns and no-receipt returns get a Target GiftCard or merchandise return card.
Refund timing
Up to 2 days to a Target Circle Card and up to 5 days to other credit cards after approval. Mailed returns take another 7 to 10 business days to inspect before approval.
Return shipping
Online orders can be returned free at any store or mailed back with a free label. Original shipping charges are only refunded when the return is Target's fault, such as a damaged or wrong item.

How to return it

  1. 1Find the order under My Purchases in the Target app or on Target.com and choose Return, which also gives you a return barcode for in-store returns.
  2. 2Bring the item with the receipt, the return barcode, or the card you paid with.
  3. 3Take it to Guest Services at any store, or attach the emailed label and drop it at UPS or FedEx.
  4. 4Keep the return receipt until the refund shows up.

What catches people out

  • Items generally need to be unopened and in new condition. Opened or damaged items can be refused.
  • Electronics drop to 30 days, and Apple, Beats, and phones drop to 14.
  • No proof of purchase means a merchandise return card, not a refund, and you must show government ID.
  • Target Plus partner items cannot be returned in store without a receipt.
  • Trading cards, opened collectibles, personalized items, and gift cards are final sale.
  • Anything ordered through DoorDash, Instacart, or Uber Eats has to be refunded by that service, not Target.
  • A gift returned with a gift receipt cannot be processed on the same day it was bought.
  • Returning the qualifying item from a free-gift or promo gift card deal reduces your refund by the gift's value.
  • Target may refund you before the mailed item arrives, then charge your card back if the item turns out to be ineligible.
  • Optical, pharmacy, Starbucks, and Target Tech purchases must be returned at those counters.
